Charmaine Wilkerson’s Black Cake premieres on Disney+ UK

Black Cake premiered 31st Jan on Disney+ across its operating territories in the UK, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Following its 1st November launch in the US, the TV drama based on the series by Charmaine Wilkerson hooks viewers in its mesmerizing web of secrets, betrayal, family history and discovery across generations.

The series is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Aaron Kaplan with Marissa Jo Cerar, serving as showrunner and adaptor. It features the impressive cast of Mia Isaac, Adrienne Warren, Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi, Glynn Turman, Ahmed Eljah, Simon Wan, and Sonita Henry. Other territories include: Benelux and France premiering on 7th February, and Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Luxembourg premiering on 13th March.

In the late 1960s, a runaway bride named Covey disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder. Fifty years later in California, Eleanor Bennett, a widow in her 60s, loses her battle with cancer, leaving her two estranged children a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America. These stories, narrated by Eleanor, shock her children and challenge everything they thought they knew about their family’s origin.

“I just fell in love with it. Charmaine’s writing is just so beautiful, and I cried every five pages, like a gut punch – but there’s so much joy in it,” says showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar.
