The Boy Who Sailed The Ocean in an Armchair by Lara Williamson to be adapted into a stage musical

A stage musical adaptation of Lara Williamson’s hit novel The Boy who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair is in development. 

Featuring a book and score by Jordan Li-Smith, it will receive a workshop produced by the National Youth Music Theatre in August 2022, before a full workshop production in 2023.

The show has previously been workshopped at the University of Chichester, directed by Kate Golledge, with movement & choreography by Chris Whittaker and music direction by Ben Ferguson.

The Boy who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair tells the story of Becket, whose life is turned upside down when he, his brother and his Dad are running away from home in the middle of the night, leaving behind their almost-mum Pearl without saying goodbye. Whilst coming to terms with the fact that his real mum died before he had a chance to say goodbye to her too, he arms himself with an armchair of stories and one thousand paper cranes, determined to bring his family back together again.

The musical marks Jordan Li-Smith’s debut as a writer and composer. He says: “I am thrilled and honoured to be adapting Lara Williamson’s beautiful novel. I’m incredibly lucky (and spoilt) to have such loveable, strong characters and an emotional story which I deeply resonated with. The novel sang to me when I read it. I could hear my unfinished songs and I could see them come to life in my head. I can’t wait for audiences to experience Becket’s magical world.

Jordan has not only delivered the humour, heartbreak and hope in abundance but he has brought the characters to life in the most exciting, thought provoking and creative way. It really is a privilege to be part of something so special and I cannot wait for audiences to climb aboard the armchair and experience this moving musical journey.”
