Charlie Bird’s The Mindful Detective: Art of Death has been optioned for TV by World Productions, the team behind the hit series’ The Bodyguard and Line of Duty.

The first book in The Mindful Detective series, Art of Death follows two ‘chalk and cheese’ detectives attempting solve the murder of a performance artist.

When a famously narcissistic performance artist is found floating in a tank of formaldehyde at her own private view, suspicion falls on those closest to her.

Leading the murder investigation is DI Shanti Joyce, recently transferred from London to Yeovil following the collapse of her marriage and a case that went wrong. She soon concludes that the mystery requires left-field thinking, and when a colleague suggests Vince Caine, aka the Mindful Detective, Shanti tracks him down.

The pair delve into the artist’s Bohemian circle and discover a hotbed of resentment and jealousy. But as they soon realise, the murderer is both canny and elusive.

Can the unlikely mix of Shanti’s down-to-earth pragmatism and Caine’s otherworldly intuition really prove a winning combination?

UK & Commonwealth book rights for three titles were snapped up by Krystyna Green, publishing director at Constable/Little, Brown, who said of the deal: “I’m absolutely delighted to have been offered the opportunity of publishing this series; we’ve hit the ground running in terms of the authors’ fantastic writing credentials and cannot wait to introduce their joint venture to a wide-reaching audience.”

Charlie Bird is a pseudonym for two established authors who live in the West Country and write as a duo:

Paddy Magrane is a journalist who writes for the Telegraph, Guardian and Observer, and a qualified psychotherapist.

The TV deal has already been announced in The Bookseller and Deadline.
