We’re thrilled that The Women Are Not Fine by Hope Reese has been bought by Brazen after a 24hr pre-empt. UK and Commonwealth rights was acquired by publisher Romilly Morgan, from our agent Emma Bal. The book is set for publication in 2025.
The Women Are Not Fine by Hope Reese is a historical feminist true crime book exploring the fascinating and complicated dimensions of the biggest mass poisoning in modern history, which saw dozens of rural Hungarian women administering arsenic to their husbands. Described as bitingly feminist and searingly current, The Women Are Not Fine looks at the extremes we have to go to protect and safeguard our bodies.
Reese said: ‘As a journalist, I have spent more than a decade covering gender issues –– from boys’ deep emotional lives, to hookup culture, to abuse in lesbian relationships. In this book, I examine the story of the Angelmakers through a reporter’s lens, revealing how psychology, trauma, biology, and culture created an environment that enabled the largest mass poisoning in modern history. I am so grateful for the support and encouragement from Emma Bal and the team at MM for shepherding me through the process, and thrilled to team up with Romilly Morgan at Hachette’s Brazen Books.’
Congratulations Hope!
