Peter Bellerby, founder of Bellerby & Co. Globemakers, the world’s only truly bespoke makers of traditionally handcrafted globes, will be speaking at Stanfords Covent Garden Tuesday 12th September. Discover the inspiration behind his incredible story and his pursuit for perfection and hear about his stunning new book The Globemakers: The Curious Story of an Ancient Craft.
After a successful career in television, Peter Bellerby was running a music venue-bowling alley in London, when he went on a search for a special globe for his father’s 80th birthday. Not finding what he wanted, he set about making a globe himself by hand, which was the start of an arduous and fantastic journey that led to the founding of his company in 2008. Bellerby & Co. have won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the international trade category twice, in 2018 and 2021.
The chapters of The Globemakers take us through the journey of how to build a globe, or ‘earth apples’ as they were first known, and includes vignettes on history, art history, astronomy and physics, as well as the day-to-day craftsmanship at the workshop itself.
Using illustration, photography and narrative, this beautiful book is a fascinating celebration of globes, and the wonder of the world they encapsulate.
