Katherine Slee’s poignant exploration of female friendship, The Love We Left Behind, is published today on kindle and paperback by Lake Union.

Katherine Slee returns with another emotional read. Inspired by her time living in Oxford and the break-up of a close friendship 15 years ago, The Love We Left Behind is a heart-wrenching novel that not only demonstrates the devastation of a friendship break-up but also how they can be changed in our search for happily ever after. Early Amazon reviewers have given their thoughts on the novel:

Such a beautifully written evocation of youth. There was nothing I didn’t love about this book. It isn’t often that I find myself moved to tears by a piece of writing but this did it. It will stay with me for a long time. Booklover

I loved this book. The way it used language was beautiful and it was really emotion driven. I loved the way it teased us about this cataclysmic event that happened all the while the two timeline were converging. It did take a bit to get your head around the timeline but I think it helped to build up the tension as you knew you were moving closer and closer to the defining event. There is more than one twist – including one I definitely did NOT see coming. A fabulous book. Highly recommended. ManyMummy

This book explores friendship between young people in a very personal and nostalgic way which immerses the reader into the story completely, something which I was unaware of until I realised I had not taken my eyes off the pages for three hours! The idea is extremely unique and the little tidbits of unknown words and foreign language the writer inserts into each chapter make it all more memorable. I think, best of all though, is the plot twist. Although it doesn’t come until the book is virtually over, it throttles and shocks the reader in a way which has you paralyzed for an hour in disbelief. After that, a series of bombshells make the slow start and overindulgent descriptions of both character and setting all very worth it. Definitely worth five stars and beyond. Great, great book! Here is a little look at what The Love We Left Behind has in store…

London, 2012. With her adoring fiancé, financial independence and a close-knit group of friends, Erika should have life all figured out―but she can’t shake the feeling that there’s something missing. And when she stumbles upon a reminder of her past one day, she’s confronted with a part of her life she’s spent almost twenty years trying to forget.

1995. Smart, tenacious Niamh is in her second year at Oxford University. Unlike her best friend Erika, she’s shy and feels like she doesn’t belong, so she’s happy to let Erika take the lead in their friendship. But everything changes when she meets Leo and feels the uplifting power of love for the first time.

As Erika’s story takes us back into the past, Niamh’s brings us forward towards the present, until the two meet one fateful summer’s night that will change the path of their friendship forever.

Congratulations Katherine on this stunning read!
