We are so excited to share that the unforgettable debut Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson, publishes today in UK paperback (Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House). Set in 1960s Caribbean and present-day California, Black Cake is a sweeping multi-generational story about two estranged siblings who must set aside their differences to deal with the consequences of their mother’s hidden past centered around a traditional Caribbean cake.

UK rights were acquired in a major six-figure deal by Jessica Leeke at Michael Joseph who called it ‘a beacon of personal courage and resilience for our times’. Since its initial publication in 2022, Black Cake has enjoyed incredible success: it was chosen as ‘one to watch’ by Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Stylist, BBC News, Daily Mail, Waterstones, Good Housekeeping, Prima Magazine, Metro, and BookBar, to name just a few.

Black Cake was selected as Fiction Book of the Month in February 2022 by Independent Booksellers, and was selected as an Audible best audible book of 2022. Black Cake was also chosen as Editor’s Choice in The Bookseller and A Good Housekeeping Book of the Year. It is already in development for the screen as Hulu original drama series, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Aaron Kaplan.
