It’s World Kindness Day! And amidst the celebrations, it’s our pleasure to announce the official launch of the Saving Missy paperback campaign by HarperCollins.

Saving Missy is Beth Morrey‘s debut novel, cheekily dubbed a “coming-of-old” tale which follows formidable but lonely pensioner, Missy Carmicheal, as she begins unlikely friendships with two strangers, who add a warmth to her life that she didn’t know was missing.

The novel was acquired after an incredible ten-way auction, and was hotly anticipated prior to its February publication by HarperCollins / HarperFiction. Following this, the book enjoyed massive success, as readers’ hearts were warmed by this poignant story. The title was a smash-hit upon hardback release, hitting  no.9 on the Sunday Times top 10 bestseller list, and peaking at no. 6. The publication called it a “a touching, deftly written debut that celebrates community and kindness”  and bestselling author Nina Stibbe enthused that it was “bittersweet, tender, thoughtful and uplifting”. The book was also the biggest-selling British hardback debut of the first half of this year, and has sold over 50,000 copies across all formats, to date. Beth was featured by The Guardian, as one of the top 10 debut novelists to watch in 2020, and in the BBC’s curated selection of 2020 adult titles.

There’s no better day to go live with a campaign that celebrates such a beautiful story of human connection. Throughout the day, Beth and her team will be engaging in various acts of kindness; they have encouraged select influencers to nominate ‘local heroes’, who will receive special gift-bundles, curated in partnership with the Tandem Collective, with a host of goodies from Bird & Blend, Montezumas, Union Coffee and Papier. For Friday only, the eBook version is also reduced to only 99p, as a part of a Kindle Daily Deal! And keep an eye on the HarperCollins UK socials, where they’ll be amplifying discussions around kindness all day. Also, be sure to check out Beth’s Instagram Live at 8pm, in which she’ll be joined 5 influencers, to round off the day’s events. But the fun will continue well into the weekend, when hundreds of early print copies of the gorgeous paperback will be gifted to authors, the media and booksellers, prior to its publication on the 4th March 2021.

Publisher Lynne Drew noted: “It’s been wonderful to see how readers everywhere have taken SAVING MISSY to their hearts. There couldn’t be a more perfect novel for this year than this story of one woman’s loneliness and isolation being assuaged by small acts of kindness and friendship in her community.”

A delighted Beth commented: “I’m so thrilled that readers have connected with Saving Missy, and delighted by the idea of launching the paperback campaign around World Kindness Day. We all need a bit of kindness right now, and I hope that Missy can help spread the love – as well as the chocolates.”

You can never have too much kindness in the world – which is why we are so pleased that this book is being utilised to engage  hundreds of people in conversations and initiatives around this theme. And this is just the beginning – in the lead-up to publication, there’s a lot in the pipeline, including mass reader outreach, Q&As with Beth herself, and a potential national radio station partnership.
