In a six-figure two book deal, Magpie Books has triumphed in attaining What Makes A Monster by Emily Cooper.

Set in a world where magic is ruled by constellations, the romantasy debut follows villain Celestine Savareau rotting in prison after failing to attempt to end the world. But now they want her to save it. As her lover draws ever closer to seeing out their plans for eternal darkness, she is the last person who would stop him. Too bad she’s the only one who can.

Editor Elizabeth Vaziri who bought the UK & Commonwealth rights shared that “What Makes a Monster is a masterclass in what makes a page-turner: propulsive writing, glittering magic, an unforgettable heroine – and scorching chemistry to bring down the stars.”

Our Director of Children’s & YA, Chloe Seager commented how “it’s rare to find someone who can deftly plot, world-build, create complicated characters you genuinely care about and balance difficult themes alongside sizzling romantic tension.”

Emily added that “it’s a story about reclaiming power, and the truths we bury to survive. I can’t wait for readers to meet Celestine in all her terrible glory.”

North American rights were also sold at auction in a six-figure deal to Wednesday Books. The novel is set to be published in Spring 2027.

Emily is a published scientist and conservationist who works in marine policy. Her adult debut, Season of Fear, will be published August 2025 by Simon & Schuster in the UK, and Hachette in the US.
