Following a run of spectacular success in both sales and awards, Gail Honeyman‘s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine has been nominated for Debut Book of the Year, AudioBook of the Year and Marketing Campaign of the Year at the 2018 British Book Awards, known in the industry as the Nibbies.
A wide range of genres are represented among the Debut Book of the Year nominees. British noir title Sirens by Waterstones crime fiction buyer Joseph Knox is nominated, as is US author Gabriel Tallent’s dark thriller My Absolute Darling. Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends, as well as Yaa Gyasi’s split-narrative novel on slavery, Homegoing, are also contenders. The only non-fiction debut nominated this year is Gill Sims’ comedic account of family life, Why Mummy Drinks (Harper Non-Fiction).
2018 is the first time the AudioBook of the Year has been included in the lineup. Cathleen McCarron’s narration of Eleanor Oliphant has already won a US Audiofile Earphones Award and a Silver Award in the Radio Indies Group’s UK Audio Production Awards 2017. The audiobook is up against Stephen Fry’s narration of Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Michael Sheen’s narration of La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One by Philip Pullman. How Not to Be a Boy by Robert Webb; Kid Normal by Greg James and Chris Smith; and The Girl Before by J P Delaney have also been shortlisted.
Gail’s marketing team at HarperCollins are also nominated for Marketing Strategy of the Year for their work on Eleanor Oliphant.
