‘This town will grind people up. The mines used to do it for us, and now we just do it ourselves.’
It starts with a disappearance.
When Irene goes missing, Wyatt, her best friend and sometimes boyfriend, insists she isn’t dead. She’s just missing. He’s going to dig up the region until he finds her.
His buddies, Scooby and Troy, are caught up in troubles of their own. Increased police presence is squeezing Scooby’s meth operation and, even in the aftermath of tragedy, he can’t bring himself to tell Troy how he truly feels about him.
But Moosejaw is a town long acquainted with disappearance and death: buried iron miners, heavy drinkers, and folks who wander into and don’t come out of the hundreds of miles of dense woods stretching north to Canada.
As Irene’s disappearance ripples outward into a series of mounting tragedies, Wyatt is forced to confront his attachment to Moosejaw, a place he’s magnetized to and that he knows the history of top-to-bottom, but also a place that has tried to push him away his whole life.
