Twelve year old Jones is an orphan, training as an apprentice hunter alongside his gruff mentor, Maitland, tackling ogres, trolls and all manner of other scary creatures that live secretly in our world, and which most people presume exist only in fairytales and nightmares.
But what Jones secretly wants to be is an ordinary boy, not a member of a secret society of all-male hunters who call themselves Badlanders and who have rejected the trappings of the modern world, living instead according to their law (their Ordnung), and staying true to traditions rooted in Anglo-Saxon times.
After a hunt goes wrong and Maitland is killed saving a girl called Ruby from a dangerous species of Ogre, Jones starts to wonder if Ruby can teach him how to be ordinary. However, Ruby is secretly determined to learn magic and accidentally releases Victor Brynn, a “no-thing” (man turned bad by magic), in the process.
There’s never been a girl Badlander before, and Ruby is determined to prove she’s as good at hunting as any boy. But Ruby and Jones will need to work together to figure out what the no-things are plotting, and to keep everyone safe from the monsters that stalk the edges of this world.
